Saturday's Kansas City Star carried an article* with the headline:

In this article the author writes that as more and more pink slips are being handed out more and more workers are losing their health coverage with their jobs.   She pointed out something we all know:  "Laid-off workers cannot afford to pay the temporary continuation of their health insurance through COBRA coverage." The Labor Department recently reported that the nations unemployment rate jumped to 7.2 % in December, the highest level in 16 years.   The economy lost a net total of 2.6 million jobs in 2008.
The article continues:  "Families USA, a consumer health advocacy organization says the average national premium cost for family COBRA coverage takes up to nearly 84% of average unemployment benefits in 2008.  In Kansas and Missouri (where Allied Brokerage Services is located) the bite was 76.6% and 96.6 % respectively."
